Larry, a Southern California Native, entered the United States Navy during the Viet Nam Conflict, was trained as a Hospital Corpsman and then Operating Room Technician. He served in Vietnam with the 1st Medical Battalion, 1st Marine Division, of the United States Marine Corps, in Chu Lai and then Danang, Vietnam. Upon discharge from military service he obtained his degree in Respiratory Care from Mount San Antonio College, Pomona California, in 1971.
Over the years, Mr. Cherrison has worked as a Registered Respiratory Therapist at Whidbey General and Island Hospital, in Washington State; University of Texas Medical Branch, in Galveston Texas; Redding Medical Center, in Northern California; and finally returning home to Southern California in 1996 to University of California Irvine Medical Center.
In 2003, Mr. Cherrison was asked to join the Pulmonary Interventional Program at UCI. As Operations Manager, Larry has created, implemented and maintained the systems, processes and procedures for administration of flexible bronchoscopy, rigid bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy, pleuroscopy and pulmonary function testing at UC Irvine Medical Center.
Mr. Cherrison is increasingly involved in managing and coordinating CME Educational Courses in Interventional Bronchoscopy and Pleuroscopy at UC Irvine. He has used his improvisational skills in developing an innovative, inexpensive training model for educating physicians in bronchoscopic procedures such as Endobronchial biopsy, transbronchial needle aspiration, electrocautery and cryotherapy. This model is being used in national and international workshops.
On a personal note, Larry and his wife, Sheryl, of 41 years, have raised 4 children and cared for 14 foster children over the years. His favorite recreational pastimes are bodysurfing the waves of the Southern California Coast and walking on the beach with his wife.
