Dr. John Conforti obtained his Doctorate in osteopathic Medicine degree at Southeastern University College, Florida in 1989. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at Tulane University, New Orleans, LA in 1993, and his subspecialty training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, also at Tulane (1996), spending one year perfecting his interventional pulmonology skills under the guidance of Dr. Kevin Kovitz. He was then appointed Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, where he was also Director of Interventional Pulmonology and Bronchoscopy. From 1998 to 2002, Dr. Conforti assumed a faculty appointment at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, where he was also co-Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship training program. Since 2002, Dr. Conforti has joined the faculty at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, where he is currently and Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Interventional Pulmonology Fellowship program.
Dr. Conforti is a member of several professional societies, including the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Thoracic Society, and the North Carolina Thoracic Society. He also serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Bronchology and the Journal of Clinical Pulmonary Medicine. During his training he received numerous awards such as Intern of the year, Junior Resident of the year, and Senior Resident of the year. In addition, he has repeatedly received teacher of the year awards, including a Master Teacher Award ward in years 2004-2007, and a Family Practice Teaching Award, also in 2007.
In addition to pulmonary and critical care medicine, John Conforti has specific interests in interventional pulmonology. He is currently working in the creation of a database as part of a multi-institutional study including other university medical centers in North Carolina. A major focus of his professional writing has been on myths and realities of bronchoscopic practice. A multitalented individual, Dr. Conforti is also an expert in Chinese Kung Fu martial arts, an experience marathon runner, and an amateur jazz pianist with club experience.
