Scott Ferguson obtained his medical degree from University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in 1988. After residency in internal medicine at the University of North Carolina hospitals in Chapel Hill, he pursued pulmonary and critical-care training for 1994 to 1997 at the University of Iowa. He continued there as a research fellow, and subsequently as an assistant professor and associate professor of medicine, until 2008. He is now associate professor of medicine and the Director of interventional pulmonology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin, USA.
Dr. Ferguson's primary interest was in the field of tuberculosis, an interest he developed while working for the Department of Health and Human Services between 1991 and 1994. In fact, it is this experience working with Native American Indians in Arizona, prompted him to pursue a career in pulmonary and critical care medicine. He has since incorporated the knowledge and expertise he gained as a bench researcher in infectious lung diseases to the field of interventional pulmonology. In this area, he has multiple publications investigating the use of novel imaging technologies such as virtual bronchoscopy, navigational bronchoscopy, and utilization of radiographic imaging for bronchoscopic procedures.
Dr. Ferguson has been active and teaching for more than 10 years, and has most recently initiated a training program for first year pulmonary and critical care fellows in the Midwest. He is an advocate for the use of simulation technologies so that patients may not bear the burden of procedure-related training.
